The short answer
Memory has three steps: encoding, storage and retrieval. Most everyday "memory failures" — the lost keys, the name on the tip of your tongue — are actually attention failures at the encoding step or slow lookups at the retrieval step, not lost memories. Normal ageing slows retrieval and makes divided attention harder, but it does not erase knowledge or make you unable to learn.
